What is Emotional Intelligence? Is it Real?

How often have you seen the phrase “Emotional Intelligence” or “EQ”? It has become one of the top searches on the internet today. WOW!! Now I have to ask the question – “Should I believe?”.

Well, we have to start somewhere, so let’s start at the beginning.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your emotions in positive ways to communicate effectively, relieve stress, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. How many of us agree this is an essential ability in today’s society? These human qualities go beyond gender or superficial differences and refer to a healthy balance of a wide range of abilities.

EQ has also been a coined phrase since the late 80s, so it’s not new thinking. It is now “top of mind” thinking. And guess what? EQ is proven to be more essential in landing a job than IQ.

Research and Data

Bradberry and Greaves’ research found that 90% of the top performers studied were also high in emotional intelligence, while only 20% of bottom performers were high.

Exercise your EQ

It’s time to seriously count EQ as a must-needed ability to grow and succeed in today’s ever-changing world. One way to manage the pressures around you and increase EQ is to identify and drive your stress habits.

What is your “go-to” habit when faced with stress?

You have created a habit of how you respond to a stressful situation. Knowing the pattern allows you to adjust based on working well and how it could be working better; therefore, growing your EQ.
